Moving home is often about starting a new chapter in your life. But it can also be hard and stressful. Because moving is not just about packing up your physical stuff, it’s about packing up your emotions too.
Here are our top tips for preparing yourself emotionally for a home move.
Don’t expect it to be easy
Moves only run like clockwork in sickly sweet American movies – the kind that Channel 5 runs on midweek afternoons.
In real life, moving home is more complicated.
Embrace the fact that things WILL go wrong during the moving process. Often, the best solution is just to shrug your shoulders, breathe deeply and move on.
Allow yourself to feel
Expect to feel stressed and even anxious about moving. It’s perfectly normal.
Don’t bottle things up.
Talk to your partner and friends about how you feel. Scream or have a little weep if you want to.
Take some time out
From time to time, take a few hours, or even a full day off, and completely move away from the process. (Pun intended.)
Go out for a coffee, to the cinema, for a walk or play some sport.
Turn your phone off. Switch your emails to pause. Have a strict ‘no moving talk, thank you’ rule with your companions – even just for a day.
Say goodbye to your old place
This might sound odd, but it’s worth doing. It’s one of the best things you can do to prepare yourself emotionally for a move.
Whether it’s been a long-term home or even just a shortish rental, you’re bound to have memories firmly embedded in the bricks and mortar. That’s life.
Hopefully, you’ll have good memories – such as a first home together or the pitter-patter of tiny feet – but you might have some sad ones too.
You can bid farewell to your home just in your head if you like. Or say goodbye aloud to every room for real.
Who cares what anybody else thinks? You’ll feel all the better for it. And usually you won’t have an audience, anyway.
It’s best to start saying goodbye as soon as you’ve decided to move. This way, once moving day comes, you’ll be emotionally ready to start a new chapter in your life, too.
A good agent can help
It’s the agent’s job to help with the many aspects of moving home. And we like to think we’re good at it.
So, if you have any worries or concerns about your move, don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and talk. We’re good listeners, and we’ll do everything we can to help.
Doing business the ethical way
We are proud members of the Ethical Agent Network (EAN).
A national group of independent agents who have been independently tested to ensure we meet strict standards of honesty, service, professionalism, and community care.
