Opening Doors… Quite Literally: Lancaster, Advent Calendars and the Joy of the Countdown

As December tiptoes in with frosty mornings and twinkling lights, there’s something wonderfully nostalgic about opening that first little door on an Advent calendar. It’s such a simple ritual, yet it brings a spark of childlike excitement — a daily moment of “what’s behind this one?”

And perhaps it’s no surprise that here at JDG, we take this door-opening business very seriously. This year, the whole team has been treated to Tony’s Chocolonely Advent calendars. As estate agents, we do love opening doors — whether it’s the front door of a new Lancaster home or a tiny cardboard flap concealing a chunk of salted caramel chocolate.

I’ll admit though… I’m a complete sucker for the beauty advent calendars. The little pots of creams, serums and self-care treats get me every time. They may feel like a splash-out, but honestly, compared to the world’s most extravagant advent calendar, I’m telling myself they are great value!

Yes — the most expensive Advent calendar ever created came in at a jaw-dropping £7.8 million. Designed by Debbie Wingham for a Swiss client, it cost 27 times the average UK house price, which currently sits around £293,000. To put that into Lancaster terms, that’s more than 40 three-bed semis in Bowerham or a whole street of terraces off Freehold. Can you imagine opening those doors every day? You’d half expect Santa to pop out demanding a viewing!

What’s lovely, though, is how universal the tradition is. Almost half of the UK is planning to buy an Advent calendar this year. Last year:

  • A third spent between £5–£20
  • 10% treated themselves to the £20–£50 range
  • 4% went for £50–£75
  • And 3% splashed out over £75

It’s a little gesture that has been part of Christmas since the 19th century, starting in Germany and later becoming a staple in British homes after the Second World War. That daily countdown has woven itself into our festive routines — much like decorating the tree, planning Christmas lunch, or wondering whether the weather will allow a walk along the Lancaster Canal without slipping!

And if you think about it, Advent calendars and houses really do share a theme. Both are filled with small moments of anticipation. Every door you open — whether it’s a chocolate calendar or a front door on a viewing — holds a tiny promise. Maybe it’s a sweet treat. Maybe it’s your future home. Maybe it’s simply a spark of joy that brightens the day.

Here in Lancaster, December is often when people start chatting about their plans for the new year. Some begin thinking about moving. Some wonder whether now is the time to get their home valued. Others simply like browsing Rightmove with a hot chocolate in hand — and we totally get that.

But just like an Advent calendar, moving home isn’t something you open all at once. It’s a step-by-step countdown. You learn a little more each day. You get a feel for the market. And maybe one day, you find the door that feels right for you.

So as we countdown to Christmas with our Tony’s chocolate and a few too many beauty miniatures, we hope you’re enjoying the magic of the season in your own Lancaster home. If 2026 may be the year you want to open a new door — quite literally — the JDG team is always here to guide you through.
