How long will you live in your Lancaster or Morecambe home for?

When you bought your home, how long did you think you would stop for? Less than 5 years? Maybe no more than 10 years? Or did you think it could be your forever home?

When I bought my first home, it was full of naive hopes and dreams. I was getting married and thought this house would be a perfect place to raise a future family. I thought we would be there for at least 5 to 10 years. How wrong was I? A separation meant the home was sold within 3 years.

My 2nd home was just me. I knew it was a stop-gap but just did not how long. Within another 3 years, I was off again. This time I rented it out as I was moving in with my new partner.

My 3rd home is where we are now. If you asked me back in 2008 I would have said this was our forever home. We are married. We are settled. But 13 years later and talks of moving sometime in the future have started. I don’t think we’ll make it to 20 years where we are now!

The thing is, we all make plans. But plans change. People move for all sorts of reasons and as families grow, priorities change. People end up moving more often than they expect to.  This was a key finding of the 2021 Home Moving Trends Survey, conducted by the Property Academy and analysed by Dataloft which analysed the moving trends and thoughts of over 14,000.

Did you know? 13% of people expect to stay in their homes for less than 5 years. The reality is 28% of people will move. This is great news for me – after all, I am an estate agent!

Over the past 18 months, more people have moved than anyone ever imagined would do. It is thought 40% of all recent home movers have done so because of the pandemic. It backs up my thoughts, people’s plans really change and often through a trigger.

What was your moving trigger? And are you really living in your dream home right now? What would make you want to move? A bigger garden? An extra bedroom? A home office? Mine is to live closer to the sea so I can enjoy more beach walking with John and Boots. I’d love to know yours!

If you are thinking of moving, we would love to help. We have just been awarded the BEST Estate Agent in the UK award for our marketing, service and results by THe Property Academy in conjunction with Rightmove.
