Who lives in your Lancaster home?

The chances are you will know who lives under your Lancaster roof, or at least I hope you do, but did you know that household composition has changed quite a bit since the last census in 2011?

I love studying the census data. The changes fascinate me, especially when it comes to property. Since 2011, there has been a 6% rise in households and a noticeable change in their composition and size in England and Wales.

There are now 20% more households where couples are above the retirement age. People are living longer. This change has driven demand for more property variety in the market, particularly bungalows, purpose-built retirement accommodations and homes with generous living areas as people look to downsize with the aim of not having as many bedrooms, but still retaining spacious living rooms. It’s no wonder bungalows in Lancaster sell very quickly and commands a premium price too!

There has been a decline in the proportion of households made up of child-free couples, with only a 1% increase. However, the number of family households with children has increased by 7%, pointing to a demand for homes with two or more bedrooms.

When we look at household sizes, which are different to household composition, the biggest surprise was seeing that there has been a 9% growth in homes with just 3 people. Again this does point towards a demand for homes with 2 bedrooms or more?

How many people live in your Lancaster home? Do you see it expanding? Or are you hoping the kids will soon be leaving!
