Let’s talk about the humble Lancaster bungalow and how its energy efficiency can be increased!

Today I want to chat about bungalows. The bungalow is a fascinating property and something which I wish Lancaster had more of!

Let’s start with 3 interesting facts that Chat GPT came up with.

  • Bungalows are single-storey houses that are popular in the UK due to their easy accessibility and suitability for older people, individuals with mobility issues, and families with young children.
  • The term “bungalow” comes from the Indian word “Bangla,” which means “belonging to Bengal,” and was originally used to describe small, thatched cottages in the Indian subcontinent.
  • Bungalows in the UK were first built in the early 20th century as holiday homes for the middle classes (hence many are found in coastal areas), but their popularity grew after World War II when they were used to address the UK’s post-war housing shortage. Today, bungalows are commonly found in suburban and rural areas across the country.

It was interesting to read what Chat GPT had to say, however, I feel the need to add to this….

First of all, did you know that just 9.3% of homes across the UK are bungalows? Of all the property sales in the UK last year only 8% were bungalows and over 10% of bungalow sales happened in March. It’s quite fascinating, isn’t it!

Lancaster has a serious bungalow shortage. When do they come available they tend to get snapped up quickly and not just by older people. The bungalow is loved by many.

But did you also know this? Of all the property types out there, the bungalow offers the greatest potential increase in the energy efficiency of any housing type, through improvements such as insulation and solar power. On average, bungalows currently have the potential to increase energy efficiency scores by 36%. Other houses typically only have the potential to improve by 30% and flats by 10%. This is due, in the main, to their larger, wider-spanning roofs!

So in a nutshell, if you are looking for a Lancaster home where you can really improve energy efficiency, don’t overlook the humble bungalow!

Ps. I’ve just discovered John’s parents’ first home was a pre-fabricated bungalow on Walney Island, Barrow back in the 1950s. Every day is a learning day!
