Would you buy an electric car if your Lancaster home had an electric charger?

Call me crazy, call me brave, call me sensible or call me green. I’ve gone and swapped my BMW X4 for an electric car. John has also returned his X6 and right now we are car sharing!

Going all-electric is a brave move for us. On an average week, we travel over 400 miles and the car I have chosen is a BMW i3. The range is just 170 miles which basically means I’m charging daily and as I don’t yet have a charger installed at home, I’m a regular at the charging stations both Booths and on the M6!

What is interesting is the number of conversations going all-electric is opening up for me and people’s varying viewpoints. Charging seems to be the biggest concern, followed by range anxiety (the fear of running out of battery!). What is surprising though is people’s faces, when I share with them that my fuel cost has almost quartered. When my charger is installed at home, this will decrease even further!

I was discussing our new car with our market research team. Did you know that almost 94,000 new electric/hybrid cars have been registered this year which accounts for 22.5% of all car sales? This is up 13.8% from 12 months ago.

The government is set to legislate that all new homes and buildings with an allocated parking space will be required to have an EVCP. This is great news as a recent survey by the Home Builders Federation has revealed that 71% of respondents said they would be more likely to buy an electric car if their house came with an Electric Vehicle Charge Point (EVCP).

It seems that the ongoing energy crisis has not only sparked concerns about the energy efficiency of our homes, it has also made us consider the type of vehicle we drive.

Would you consider an electric car? We would love to know. If you see me driving around in my little dot (that’s what I have named it – the dot!), please give me a wave!
